To all parents of our juvenile athletes,
Craughwell AC is organising a major road race on Sunday 14th March and need your help. Profits from the race are going towards the provision of facilities for the athletic club. And it is anticipated that the race will become a major fund-raiser for the club in the years ahead. Headquartered at the national school, the race commitee need approximately 30 marshalls out on the course and many more helpers at race HQ at the school. Please email Patrick at the following address if you are willing to help out on the day as a race marshall.
This will involve stewarding for approximately 2 hours at one of the many points on the course where traffic might be a problem. The county council are closing the roads for the duration of the race, so that will help make the job easier. You can view the race route at:- http://www.mapmyrun.com/view_route?r=307126002270523561 For many parents of our juvenile athletes, this will pass close to or right by your front door, so maybe you'd consider giving a few hours of your time to helping the race go smoothly. You can read more about the race at:- http://www.craughwellac.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=40&Itemid=91 The more help, the better the race will go. And the better the race goes, the better the experience for participants. And the better the experience, the bigger the race will become next year. And the bigger the race becomes next year, the bigger the funds that are raised for facilities. And the bigger the funds, the better the facilities. So the more help, the better the facilities! thanks Michael [p.s. adding the photograph above was Mark's work, not mine!! I think its a scary photo and will only frighten parents away!]

Connacht Indoors The provisional order of events and rules/regulations for the Connacht Indoors on 14 Feb and 20 Mar are as follows: - provisional order of events - rules and regulations
Note for U11 athletes and younger (as some are asking this question), unfortunately Connacht and National indoor competition only starts at age group U12. We still hope to organise a friendly competition for these age groups in Nenagh some time during February - possibly during the schools' mid-term break. National Juvenile Indoors While no information has been published on the order of events for the National Juvenile Indoors finals, usually the order is the same as the previous year. The National finals are on the weekends of 27/28 March and 10/11 April in Nenagh. Last year, the events were spread over the 4 days as follows:-

I was a spectator for this race last year through injury but don't plan on missing it again. Last year it was won by Clare's Kenneth Rodgers who improved amazingly over 2009. Kenneth finished ahead of our own Johnny Lane. I have to say I was impressed with the quality of the race organisation, safety, accuracy of the course and the refreshments afterwards. It's an impeccable race on a lovely scenic route. One of the members of our club Niall Callanan is on the organising committee and since it's just up the road so we should give it our support. See you there!

Good Performances at Juvenile Multi-events |

The club had a number of athletes in action at the National finals of the juvenile multi-events in Nenagh on Saturday. Maria McNamara led the way in the U16 girls event with a points total of 2364 which included new PBs in the hurdles and in the 800m. Maria's scores were 60m hurdles 10.2, long jump 4.31m, shot putt 6.36m, high jump 1.41m and 800m 2.43.4. That was good enough for a 5th place finish overall, not far at all from the medals and only for the jumping events not going Maria's way today, she'd have come home with some silverware. In the U14 boys event, Damien O'Boyle, Conor Duggan and Brian Concannon put in respectable performances in their events to take 10th, 13th and 16th place with results as follows. Damien's time was the fastest in the 800m while only for a bad fall in the hurdles Conor would have placed higher. Damien: 1812 pts [hurdles 11.9, long jump 3.36, shot putt 6.73, high jump 1.22, 800m 2.33.8] Conor: 1558 pts [hurdles 12.8, long jump 3.73, shot putt 6.95, high jump 1.22, 800m 2.56.6] Brian:1333 pts [hurdles 12.9, long jump 3.45, shot putt 5.12, high jump 1.10, 800m 2.49.8] In the U14 girls competition, Ellen Treacy and Ellen Fitzpatrick performed well to take 7th and 15th place with results as follows: Ellen T: 1708 pts [hurdles 11.4, long jump 3.74, shot putt 5.56, high jump 1.30, 800m 2.59.5] Ellen F: 1498 pts [hurdles 12.2, long jump 3.76, shot putt 6.03, high jump 1.21, 800m 3.04.3] Full results are available at:- http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/juvenile-combined-events-2010-final-result.pdf There were also good performances midweek in the South Connacht secondary schools cross country with the highlight being Peadar Harvey's victory in the senior boys race - I will update the website when full results are available so that I don't miss anyone!

Well I for one didn't expect this on its first year, but the Craughwell 10 has sold out, having reached its target of 500 entries. Almost as if it were planned by race director Peter "lucky" O'Sullivan we managed to sell out on the day of the race launch bash which was also a great success.
To all those that have managed to get their entries in - we're really loking forward to seeing you on the day. To those that didn't get in - sorry about that :-( There's always next year or if you are local think about volunteering for the helper team!

Juvenile Athletes Excel at National Senior Championships |

The club’s progress in track and field was again underlined in Nenagh last weekend when 9 of the club’s juvenile athletes joined with Sarah Finnegan, William Finnegan and Diarmuid Quill to compete in the National Senior Indoor Relays and National Junior/Senior Combined Events. William’s and Diarmuid’s success in the high jump has already been covered by Tony so I will just outline the performances from our juveniles in some more detail here. | | Highlight of the weekend was Rachel Finnegan’s victory in the Junior Women Pentathlon, scoring a new indoor PB of 2377 points to claim victory by the tiny margin of 17 points. Rachel recorded 10.26 in the hurdles, 4.50m in the long jump, 6.18m in the shot putt (PB), 1.33 in the high jump and 2.40.84 in the 800m. Sophie Ralston took 4th place with a PB score of 1940 points (11.45 hurdles, 4.42m long jump, 5.30m shot putt, 1.30m high jump and 2.53.19 800m). Read on for more .... |

Elite Athletes Honoured at Galway Sports Star Awards |

Tuesday, 26 January 2010 |
 | | Last Saturday night, two of Galway’s leading sports women received the most prestigious sports award west of the Shannon when they were honoured at the Connacht Tribune Sports Stars Awards for 2009. The achievements of both ladies are well documented on this website and elsewhere. But let’s recap for a minute. For Olive Loughnane from our neighbouring club Loughrea AC, 2009 was a fantastic year – becoming only the 4th ever senior athlete from Ireland to win a medal at the World Outdoor Track & Field Championships, ‘following in the footsteps’ of race walker Gillian O’Sullivan and runners Eamonn Coghlan and Sonia O’Sullivan. Well done Olive! For our own Cathriona Farrell, 2009 was a special year also – combining a successful Leaving Certificate year with an exceptional year in athletics when she won numerous National titles (as usual!) and topped it off with an incredible 4th place finish at the European Youth Olympics in Finland with a super leap of 1.79m, just missing out on a bronze medal in the process. Well done Cathriona, we’re all so proud of you! |

Craughwell 10 Launch: Any excuse for a night out |

If you were floating around the registration area at yesterdays race you might have heard a few conversations like the following:
- Hey - are you coming to the Craughwell 10 race Launch on Friday night? - What the hell is a race launch? - Free finger food, fun and chat in Cawleys. - Oh great - I love race launches! With the race now almost sold out, we are having a long overdue night out for the fun of it. We will have the sponsors, some press photographers and some music, etc. Everyone is invited - clubmates, other clubs, and anyone generally interested in athletics or running around Galway and the west. If you are interested in offering your services as a helper or marshal for the race we can also take your name there too as we are only starting to build the extended team now. When you see the number of marshals Athenry had out yesterday it's clear the size of operation a race is so you will be a very welcome addition! See you Friday 29th January in Cawleys from 8PM!

Gary just can't wait to get his slice of Barm Brack
Athenry AC put on another exceptional display of race organisation yesterday. Despite two unavoidable reschedules they still got over 500 runners to line up. This race has something for everyone - top quality, friendly atmosphere, safety and I am still trying to clear the fuzzy feeling from my teeth after all the buns, biscuits and cakes I demolished after the event! I woke up thirsty this morning! The provisional results are on the athenry website here. Unfortutunately they don't mention club so I can't filter by club to display the Craughwell results just yet but there was a huge representation from the club. Supremely talented Gary Thornton of GCH (left) won the race in record-breaking fashion - finally achieving his goal of being the first man under 30 minutes on the Athenry course. Having set this time, Gary can now safely relax and enjoy his Christmas puddings guilt-free in the future. According to one bystander who watched the race, breaking the time seemed in doubt but Gary put in a blistering home straight to beat his target time by 3 seconds. Special mention should also be given to the Womens race - won in an incredible 35:17 by Teresa McGloin ahead of last year's winner Catherine Conway who herself ran an awesome PB of 36:03. The course itself was not the traditional one - they avoided the scenic arch finish this year, to give the roomier and probably safer finish area of the National 10k in 2008. I think this route is actually quite a bit faster too - the twists and turns are a lot less on the home straight and there is more downhill. Whether for this reason or the ideal conditions, there were PBs all through the field yesterday. Craughwell came home with lots of crystal - with Val, Kathleen, Dervella, Pat Reidy all claiming category prizes (I hope I didn't miss anyone). The senior mens team came second in a tight 3-way affair with GCH and Ennis Track. Well done to all of the Craughwell athletes who took part - it was great to see so many clubmates out wearing their singlets and at the end in the very nice Top 50 finisher T-Shirts. Running can help boost brain power |

We all knew already that athletes were away smarter than everyone else ... but the Irish Independent confirmed it today ... http://www.independent.ie/health/diet-fitness/running-can-help-boost-brain-power-2021454.html. "The study followed two groups of mice, one of which had unlimited access to a running wheel throughout, whey they clocked up an average of 24km a day, while the other mice formed a control group. During the brief training sessions, they were placed in front of a computer screen which displayed two identical squares side by side. According to the study, if they nudged the one on the left with their nose they received a sugar pellet reward. If they nudged the one on the right, they got nothing. They were then subjected to a memory test where the more they nudged the correct square, the better they scored. The running mice scored nearly twice as high as the control group during the memory test, the scientists discovered, while the greatest improvement occurred in the later stages of the experiment, when the two squares were so close they nearly touched. " Interesting experiment. Maybe worth conducting it in the club :-).
