It was a tough day yesterday for watching sport, with the painful Tipp result (quiet Diarmuid!) but there was one good piece of news the weekend.  Ciara Mageean qualified for the finals of the World Junior 1500m and ran the final last weekend.  No irish athlete had ever medalled at this championship before.  Based on her PB she should have come second from last in the race but the Lisburn girl is as tough as they come and you just knew she wouldn't be happy with that.

Afterwards when asked how she felt she would cope with the Kenyans and Ethiopians - she said "I don't fear anyone, every country has as good a chance as the rest - we're all runners with two legs and one heart; the Europeans can be just as good as the Africans".

Another pretty inspirational snippet on the IAAF website about the Euro Championships which are on in Barcelona at the moment ... "In all, 1,370 athletes - 761 men, 609 women – representing all 50 European federations will be competing this week. One who’ll receive a great deal of attention is sprint legend Merlene Ottey who will be making her second European championships appearance - this time at the tender age of 50. The Jamaican-born sprinter, who has competed for Slovenia since 2002, will anchor her adopted country’s 4x100m relay team in Saturday’s first round. Now in her third decade of international competition, Ottey has a 100m season’s best of 11.67 to her credit this summer."
